Phillies Play First Fall Instructional League Game-First Round Pick Alec Bohm Goes Yard

Fall Instructional League games are much like spring training games, they are more relaxed, coaches can end or “roll” an inning and pitchers often pitch only an inning.

Someone forgot to tell Phillies’ First Round draft pick Alec Bohm…he sent a ball almost out of Spectrum Field! He hit a blazing line drive that hit off near to top of the “F” on the sign above Frenchy’s Tiki Bar! It was a thunderous hit that even the sound was no-doubt-about it. I managed to catch this swing, landing and Bohm’s bat flip and run around the bases…

Phillies Release Fall Instructional League Roster and Schedule

After a spring where the Phillies never released a workgroup player list, I was beginning to think that we would never find out the schedule nor roster for the Fall Instructional League.

Then this morning–SURPRISE! They actually posted it. Seeing as Alec Bohm will be there, I have a feeling that Baseball Ross and I will be checking in to see the goings-on at instructs. Watch this space and Baseball Ross’ blog for pictures and articles starting next week.

Threshers LHP McKenzie Mills to Marlins in trade for Justin Bour

Today the Phillies picked up 1B Justin Bour for cash and minor league LHP McKenzie Mills.

Mills has had a mediocre year, he has an ERA of 3.51, but is only 2-5 on the season. He’s also given up 7 home runs in 89 innings.

Here is the last picture of Mills in a Clearwater Threshers uniform last night as he walked out in the 5th inning:

This picture is from his last start at home with the Threshers last week:

May be a change of scenery will be just what he needs.

Phillies #1 Draft Pick, Alec Bohm Prepares for GCL Season

The Phillies have expanded their presence in the Gulf Coast League (GCL) by adding a second team.

Phillies East team, led by Roly DeArmas played today and won over the Yankees. Tomorrow the West team led by Nelson Prada play their first game.

The Phillies #1 draft pick, Alec Bohm was taking batting practice today on Schmidt field.

For now, we are thinking he will be on the West team. He will likely move up after a few games, which is what they did with Adam Haseley last season.

I also took video of his last at-bat. See HERE.

I managed to talk to him after practice and he seems to be a nice guy. I’m excited to see him play and will be there tomorrow so stay tuned!

It’s a Done Deal-Financing in place for New Blue Jays Spring Training Complex in Dunedin

If you’ve been following this blog for any length of time you will know that I have been invested in the Blue Jays staying in their spring-training home of Dunedin, Florida. I live only a few blocks from the stadium and have served on the Dunedin Stadium Committee for more than four years. I have sat through numerous meetings, city meetings, hearings and spoken before city council-all so I can say:

It’s finally done!

It’s been a long road and the Jays mean a lot to the city of Duneden, this is the only spring-training home they’ve ever known-they’ve been here for 42 years. By the time this deal is done they’ll be here another 25. They’re the only team in major league baseball who hasn’t moved and they won’t be moving for a long, long time.

The city council voted last night and the county voted their approval this morning.

You can read an article outlining the details of the deal HERE and watch the city council meeting HERE.

Ladies and Gentlemen Your 2018 Clearwater Threshers

Tonight is one of my favorite night of the year, the season ticket holder meet the team party. We get a picnic with the players and then they are formally introduced.

Without further ado, I give you your 2018 Clearwater Threshers HERE.

Phillies Minor League Roster Released

If you follow me on Twitter, you’ll know I reported that much to our surprise they did not release a workgroup list this year. A workgroup list is a rough list of what teams might be as usually the players who will be on the AAA team are in group 1, AA group 2 and so on.

So today we were surprised by a “master roster” of all the players in minor league camp. There’s no “order” to it other than name or position so it’s not of much value to try to figure out where players may end up when the season begins.

So here it is:

First Day of Phillies Minor League Scrimmages and a Game VS Villanova.

For Clearwater, the day started off chilly, it was 56 when Baseball Ross and I got up and it was only 59 and windy when we got to the Carpenter Complex.

Even though it was “freezing” by this Florida Girl’s definition, we stayed all day and I was rewarded. I took two of the best photos I’ve ever taken. I’ve never had any training, so when it all comes together, it’s the best feeling in the world.

I took these two pictures of pitcher Jeff Singer. If you’re familiar with the Carpenter complex, you’ll know that the bullpen between Schmidt and Ashburn fields has a mesh screen over the fencing that is impossible to shoot through. Today I noticed that the fasteners holding the bottom of the screen were missing, so that if I timed the shot and the pitch just right, I could take the shot right behind the catcher as the screen would be blown up in the air by the wind. The shots, as I said before, are two of the best I’ve ever taken.

Minor League Spring Training Rolls On-Pictures

As these early days of spring training roll on, it’s more of the “same old, same old” of pitchers fielding drills, batting practice and other drills. It’s hard to really write a narrative of the activities like it is a game. So I will give you these photos:
