More Phillies Minor Leaguers Released-As Of April 2, 2016

Since my last release post, I’ve discovered that four more Phillies minor leaguers have been released.

Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez

Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez, a Cuban, was given $12 million over four years but had only appeared in 5 1/3 major league innings.

Cody Forsythe

Cody Forsythe, who played in Clearwater last season was a surprising release.

Calvin Rayburn was a bit of a surprise as he had pitched just the day before.

Finally, Panamanian catcher Jose Mayorga was also released.

As someone who knows quite a few of these guys, in this case Rayburn and Mayorga, it’s a tough thing to see. I wish them the best and hope they fine another team soon.

What does it mean if a player is released ? What happens to them while they are hoping to get on another team. Do they stay at extended spring training facilities to keep their skills up? Or where do they go?

If they are released, they cannot practice with the team they were with, the team Is done with them. It’s like being fired. They go home. If they are from another country they have to go back there. When a team releases a player, they give them a ticket back to wherever they came from when they have the meeting to tell them they are released.

Wow! That’s pretty harsh . A young guy like Jose mayorga seemed to be a very aggressive catcher . You would think if another team may have a place for him and hope his hitting develops . If they have to go back home , they may not even have a chance to get picked up by another team. Thanks for replying

It is harsh, but it is up to the player and their agent to line up other work. It’s no different if Microsoft laid off a software engineer, the engineer would have to find a job with another company, he would expect Microsoft to get him a job with Apple.

If they have an agent, they try to find another team to get them a try out.

Oh yes, I understand now. so they can stay and try to find another team. I thought they had to go back to their country if they were here on a work visa from that particular organization.
